Import file format and templates

Snapdown accepts .csv, .xlsx, and .xls. Always start from the template Snapdown generates for your event — it already contains the right columns for your event format, and the columns change depending on the format.

The three workbook layouts

These are the labels Snapdown shows:

The layout only changes how the file is shaped. It never restricts what the importer will accept.

What Snapdown recommends

Snapdown picks a starting template from your event:

Team duals → one tab per team
More than one division configured → one tab per division
Otherwise → one combined roster

You can always choose a different layout.

Note: this recommendation applies to standalone events. A league event exports its current league roster instead, because the wrestlers already exist. See Select wrestlers for a league event.

Columns

The import screen maps source headings to Snapdown fields. These are the canonical names used by generated templates.

Wrestler details

Column	Notes
`dob`	Date of birth used for age and division eligibility
`weight`	Current or actual weight, including decimals
`gender`	Normalized to `M` or `F`
`grade`	Numeric grade; Kindergarten and Pre-K values are also accepted
`rank`	Snapdown’s 1–5 skill rank, from 1 (novice) to 5 (top tier)
`usaw_id`	USA Wrestling membership ID
`allow_mixed_gender`	Whether the wrestler can be placed in a mixed-gender matchup
`is_scoring`	Whether this event entry counts toward team scoring

First name and last name are the only fields required by every blank tournament template. A league can require DOB, grade, gender, USAW ID, or rank when adding wrestlers to league teams. Tournament format and division setup determine the event-specific fields:

weight is an actual weight. weight_class is the class a wrestler competes in. An Individual event can carry both because different divisions may use different competition types.

Accepted values

Dates of birth

Use YYYY-MM-DD, such as 2016-03-04. The importer also normalizes ordinary spreadsheet date cells, Excel serial dates, and recognizable date strings such as 03/04/2016. An invalid or future date appears in the review instead of being silently corrected.

Gender

Use M or F in a new workbook. The importer also recognizes common forms such as Male, Female, Boy, Girl, Man, and Woman. An unrecognized value becomes blank and will fail if the league requires gender.

Grade

Use a number for ordinary grades. K, KG, and Kindergarten become grade 0. PK, Pre-K, PreK, and Pre K become grade -1.

Boolean fields

For is_scoring and allow_mixed_gender, use Y or N. The importer also recognizes Yes/No, True/False, and 1/0.

Rank

Use a whole number from 1 through 5. Rank 1 is novice, 3 is experienced or average, and 5 is top tier. If the league requires rank, a missing or unrecognized value blocks that roster row.

The mapper recognizes common alternatives:

Column matching ignores capitalization and normalizes spaces in headings. The mapping screen still shows the proposed match so you can correct a confusing column before previewing the import.

Extra columns are shown as Not imported and ignored. Notes, contact fields, or coach-only columns can remain in a workbook without becoming wrestler data.

`wrestler_id` — do not edit

League-event roster exports include wrestler_id. It links each row to an existing Snapdown wrestler, carrying that wrestler’s history, ratings, and identity.

Never edit or replace it.
Never invent one.
When editing an event attendance export, delete the whole row if that wrestler is not attending.

An import that loses wrestler_id can create a duplicate instead of updating the intended event entry or can require an identity review. When using a league event export, keep every ID attached to its original wrestler.

Where to get a template

Download from the import screen inside your event. Do not reuse a template from a previous event with a different format — the columns will not match.

Generated workbooks include a READ ME tab and sample rows. Delete the sample rows before importing. For league-wide roster imports, templates are available as one sheet with a Team column or one tab per current league team.
