Import file format and templates
Snapdown accepts .csv, .xlsx, and .xls. Always start from the template
Snapdown generates for your event — it already contains the right columns for
your event format, and the columns change depending on the format.
The three workbook layouts
Section titled “The three workbook layouts”These are the labels Snapdown shows:

The layout only changes how the file is shaped. It never restricts what the importer will accept.
What Snapdown recommends
Section titled “What Snapdown recommends”Snapdown picks a starting template from your event:
- Team duals → one tab per team
- More than one division configured → one tab per division
- Otherwise → one combined roster
You can always choose a different layout.
Note: this recommendation applies to standalone events. A league event exports its current league roster instead, because the wrestlers already exist. See Select wrestlers for a league event.
Columns
Section titled “Columns”The import screen maps source headings to Snapdown fields. These are the canonical names used by generated templates.

First name and last name are the only fields required by every blank tournament template. A league can require DOB, grade, gender, USAW ID, or rank when adding wrestlers to league teams. Tournament format and division setup determine the event-specific fields:

weight is an actual weight. weight_class is the class a wrestler competes
in. An Individual event can carry both because different divisions may use
different competition types.
Accepted values
Section titled “Accepted values”Dates of birth
Section titled “Dates of birth”Use YYYY-MM-DD, such as 2016-03-04. The importer also normalizes ordinary
spreadsheet date cells, Excel serial dates, and recognizable date strings such
as 03/04/2016. An invalid or future date appears in the review instead of
being silently corrected.
Gender
Section titled “Gender”Use M or F in a new workbook. The importer also recognizes common forms
such as Male, Female, Boy, Girl, Man, and Woman. An unrecognized value becomes
blank and will fail if the league requires gender.
Use a number for ordinary grades. K, KG, and Kindergarten become grade 0.
PK, Pre-K, PreK, and Pre K become grade -1.
Boolean fields
Section titled “Boolean fields”Generated workbooks use fixed True/False choices for is_scoring and
allow_mixed_gender. The importer also recognizes Y/N, Yes/No, and 1/0.
Use a whole number from 1 through 5. Rank 1 is most experienced and rank 5 is least experienced. If the league requires rank, a missing or unrecognized value blocks that roster row.

Column matching ignores capitalization and normalizes spaces in headings. The mapping screen still shows the proposed match so you can correct a confusing column before previewing the import.
Extra columns are shown as Not imported and ignored. Notes, contact fields, or coach-only columns can remain in a workbook without becoming wrestler data.
Event seed-criterion columns
Section titled “Event seed-criterion columns”A fixed weight-class event can define its own seeding criteria, such as Season Record, State Place, Returning Champion, or Seed Points. These are event fields, not global roster columns, so configure the event’s criteria before preparing a new collection workbook when practical.
The mapping screen adds every configured criterion after the standard fields.
Number and Yes / No criteria map to one source column. A win-loss record can map
either to one combined value such as 18-2 or to separate Wins and Losses
columns containing non-negative whole numbers. If both forms are mapped, their
values must agree.
An event roster export includes its configured criterion columns. Record
criteria export as separate <Label> Wins and <Label> Losses columns for
easier spreadsheet editing. Preserve wrestler_id, division, and weight class
when using that file for an update.
A mapped blank clears that criterion on re-import; an unmapped criterion is not changed. See Manage seeds for a weight-class tournament for choosing criteria, reviewing missing data and ties, and applying the calculated order.
wrestler_id — do not edit
Section titled “wrestler_id — do not edit”League-event roster exports include wrestler_id. It links each row to an
existing Snapdown wrestler, carrying that wrestler’s history, ratings, and
identity.
- Never edit or replace it.
- Never invent one.
- Keep each ID attached to its original wrestler. Removing a row is optional; some event-selection workflows use a blank event field to leave that wrestler out instead.
An import that loses wrestler_id can create a duplicate instead of updating
the intended event entry or can require an identity review. When using a league
event export, keep every ID attached to its original wrestler.
For a fixed weight-class league event, the Weights & Records report can be used as the selection workbook. Fill Entered Weight Class only for the participating wrestlers. If the file contains both assigned and blank rows, choose the weight-class subset in the import review; the blank rows stay out of the event without being removed from the league report.
Where to get a template
Section titled “Where to get a template”Download from the import screen inside your event. Do not reuse a template from a previous event with a different format — the columns will not match.
Generated workbooks include a READ ME tab and sample rows. Delete the sample rows before importing. For league-wide roster imports, templates are available as one sheet with a Team column or one tab per current league team.
