How team points are scored
A team’s score in an individual tournament is simple addition. Every wrestler on the team adds three kinds of points: advancement points for winning their way forward in a bracket, activity points (what most coaches call bonus points) for winning by fall, tech fall, or another bonus result, and placement points for where they finish. Add any penalties or bonuses the staff records, and that’s the team race.
Duals work differently: each dual keeps its own score, covered in Team scores in dual meets below.
Turning it on
Section titled “Turning it on”Team scoring is a single switch, Team Scoring, under Scoring & Placements in Event Configuration. It covers all three kinds of points; there’s no separate switch for advancement or bonus points. The same dialog sets how many places score, which Set bracket places and team-scoring places explains.
The point values come from the event’s Scoring rules in Event Info: NFHS for high school, or NCAA for collegiate events. Each bout is scored with the event’s rules when its result is saved, so pick them before the first match.
What each win is worth under NFHS rules
Section titled “What each win is worth under NFHS rules”Advancement points go to the winner of a bout that moves them forward in an elimination bracket:
| Bout won | Advancement points |
|---|---|
| Championship bracket | 2 |
| Consolation bracket | 1 |
Placement bouts like the final or third-place match earn placement points instead of advancement points. Round-robin and pool bouts earn none; in a pool-to-bracket format only the bracket phase does. A bye only counts once the wrestler wins their next bout, so a bye followed by a loss is worth nothing.
Activity points depend on how the bout was won, in brackets, round robins, and pools alike:
| Win by | Activity points |
|---|---|
| Fall | 2 |
| Forfeit, injury default, medical forfeit, or disqualification | 2 |
| Technical fall | 1.5 |
| Major decision | 1 |
| Decision, including overtime | 0 |
Placement points depend on how many places score. Anyone finishing below the cutoff gets none:
| Place | Top 4 | Top 6 | Top 8 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | 14 | 16 | 16 |
| 2nd | 10 | 12 | 12 |
| 3rd | 7 | 9 | 9 |
| 4th | 4 | 7 | 7 |
| 5th | 5 | 5 | |
| 6th | 3 | 3 | |
| 7th | 2 | ||
| 8th | 1 |
Placement points land as soon as a place is clinched, so the race stays current during the session. Making the final locks in second-place points, and winning it bumps them to first.
Freestyle and Greco-Roman divisions score placement only: 25, 20, 15, 12, 10, 9, 8, and 6 for first through eighth, down to the same cutoff. Matchmaking formats that don’t award places don’t earn team points at all.
Leave a wrestler out of the team score
Section titled “Leave a wrestler out of the team score”Backups, JV entries, and exhibition wrestlers can compete without counting for the team. Edit the wrestler on the Roster and clear Counts toward team score. Their results still count for them individually; they just stop adding to the team total. In a dual their wins add nothing to the team score, so set this before the dual starts.
Where to see the team race
Section titled “Where to see the team race”With team scoring on and points on the board, the event Dashboard shows a Team Points card with the leaders. Tap a team to see how its total splits between advancement, activity, placement, and adjustments, wrestler by wrestler. Events with more than one division can switch between the overall race and each division’s.
Directors also get a Team Scores button on Tournament Progress (just a podium icon on a phone), and the results download includes a Team Standings sheet with the same breakdown.
Deduct or add team points
Section titled “Deduct or add team points”For an unsportsmanlike conduct deduction, or anything else the scoring doesn’t capture, open Team Scores on Tournament Progress and choose Add Adjustment. Pick the team, enter the points (negative to deduct), and give a reason.
Check the scope at the top of Team Scores first, because it decides where the adjustment counts. Recorded under the overall view, it changes only the overall standings. Recorded with a division selected, it changes that division’s standings and the overall total.
Adjustments can’t be edited. To fix one, delete it and add it again.
Record a penalty from the scoring table
Section titled “Record a penalty from the scoring table”Table scorers can deduct team points right from the bout. Open the match options (the gear) and choose Team Penalty, then pick the team, the points, and a reason. The penalty is tied to that match, counts in its division, and shows up in Team Scores, where an administrator can remove it.
Team Penalty only appears when team scoring is on or the bout is part of a dual, and it needs an internet connection.
Team scores in dual meets
Section titled “Team scores in dual meets”Each dual has its own score, shown on the dual header in Table Scoring. Under NFHS rules, the winner’s team gets:
| Win by | Dual team points |
|---|---|
| Fall, forfeit, injury default, medical forfeit, or disqualification | 6 |
| Technical fall | 5 |
| Major decision | 4 |
| Decision, including overtime | 3 |
A deduction can come off a specific dual. Team Penalty does that automatically. In Team Scores, choose the dual when you add the adjustment; leaving it on the entire event keeps it out of every dual’s score. If an adjustment would change who wins the dual, or create or break a tie, Snapdown asks you to confirm first.
See Build team duals for running duals and Round robin tiebreakers for how a tied dual is decided, including team points deducted.
