Follow your wrestler and get mat alerts

You can set up two separate things for a wrestler. Following (the star) keeps them easy to find, since you can filter the schedule down to just the kids you follow. Mat alerts (the bell) send a notification to your phone when one of their matches is getting close, with the mat number in it.

A few things to know up front:

  • It all happens in the Snapdown app for iPhone and Android. Event pages in a web browser just point you to the app.
  • Following is free. Mat alerts are part of Snapdown PRO.
  • Alerts come from the mat line-ups the director runs in Snapdown. When your wrestler’s match is placed on a mat and getting close, Snapdown sends the alert. If the event doesn’t run its mats that way, there’s nothing to send.

Open the event and go to the Match Schedule. Each upcoming match shows its bout number, its mat, and its place in line:

You see It means
Up Next It’s the next match waiting on that mat.
Up in 3 It’s third in line on that mat.
Not scheduled yet The match doesn’t have a mat yet.
Mat TBD · Schedule prepared It’s waiting in a line-up shared by several mats. Tap Estimate for a rough idea of when.

Search for your wrestler by name, or tap the star to see only the wrestlers you follow. Tapping a name opens their profile with every match they have at the event. Pull down to refresh.

If you see Follow Every Match instead of the list, the schedule isn’t included for your account at this event, and that screen shows your options.

That’s up to the director. Brackets and matches show up in the app once they publish them. Snapdown can’t predict when that will be, so watch the event’s own announcements or ask the director.

You can still get set up early. As soon as your wrestler shows up in Following & Alerts, you can follow them and turn on alerts. The alerts start once their matches reach a mat.

Open the event menu and tap Following & Alerts. Kids you registered are listed at the top with a Follow button. For anyone else, search by name or browse by team, then tap the add button next to their name.

Once followed, a wrestler has a star and a bell next to their name. The star is the favorite that the schedule filter uses. The bell is mat alerts for this event. They’re independent, so you can have one without the other.

You can also follow from the card on the event’s Dashboard, or from the star and bell at the top of a wrestler’s profile. Following a whole team with Follow all leaves alerts off, so you don’t get pinged for every bout on the roster.

Tap the bell next to a followed wrestler. If you don’t have PRO yet, the PRO screen opens first. It offers a free trial when one is available, and sometimes a pass for just this event. The first time, your phone also asks whether to allow notifications from Snapdown. Say yes, or the alerts can’t reach you.

If you already have PRO, following a wrestler from Following & Alerts or the Dashboard card turns their alerts on automatically.

Each match sends one alert, once it’s on a mat with no more than three matches waiting ahead of it. It looks like this:

Match approaching on Mat 3

Emma Smith vs Ava Jones - Up in 2 matches

Tap it to jump to the schedule. It won’t repeat as the match gets closer, so keep an eye on the schedule after that. Alerts are push notifications, not texts or emails.

Alerts are set per event, so turn them on again at each new tournament. Tap the bell again to turn them off.

Check these in order.

In Following & Alerts, make sure the bell next to your wrestler is filled in. A star by itself doesn’t send alerts.

If Following & Alerts says Notifications are off for Snapdown, tap Steps to see how to turn them back on in your phone’s settings. If it says Allow notifications on this device, tap Allow.

A wrestler’s alerts go to one phone per account: the one where you last turned them on. Turning them on from another phone with the same login moves them there. If two parents both want alerts, each should use their own account on their own phone. Alerts never arrive in a web browser.

An alert for a later-round match goes out only once both wrestlers are known and the match is on a mat.

If there’s no bell in Following & Alerts, or no Following & Alerts in the event menu, alerts aren’t available at this event. Events made up only of team duals don’t have them.

The event isn’t calling matches through Snapdown

Section titled “The event isn’t calling matches through Snapdown”

If your wrestler’s match never shows Up Next or Up in on the schedule, the event isn’t running its mat line-ups in Snapdown, so there’s nothing to trigger an alert. Listen for the event’s own mat calls.
